Couple Money Weekly Round-Up: Try to Be Earth Friendly Year Round

by Elle on April 25, 2010

I want to quickly mention a great cause over at Nerd Dash 2010 where Steve is trying to raise money to send 40 kids over to Camp Sunshine. What is Camp Sunshine?

Camp Sunshine programs allow children and families to share similar experiences and to participate in activities that promote normal childhood development as they cope with the challenges of childhood cancer.

It’s a great cause and if you have a moment today, please check out Steve’s whole Nerd Dash 2010 plan.

Earth Friendly Tips for Couples that Can Save Money

Taking care of the earth doesn't have to be hard.

Taking care of the earth doesn't have to be hard.

Considering how many people were talking about ‘being green’ with Earth Day this past week, I wanted to share some earth friendly tips we tried and a couple that we’re looking into.

  • Go paperless with some of your bills and use inline bill pay to stay on track.
  • Car pool whenever you can. You can also try to consolidate errands and trips. I really got motivated with this when gas prices were past $4/gallon.
  • Watch your thermostat’s temperature. We’ve saved some money with this tip and we’re looking at buying a programmable thermostat to save a bit more. Any recommendations?
  • Go to your local library to try books instead of just buying all of them new.
  • Buy compact fluorescent light bulbs for your house. They’re more energy efficient and prices have dropped over the last couple of years.
  • Avoid buying bottled water and buy a reusable bottle.
  • Landscape your yard with some native plants.
  • If you’re not already, do full loads of laundry and set the water temperature to cold.

Paperless is a big thing we should all be doing I think…. If you really need statements on paper you can print them out once a month and just have one or two sheets of paper and no additional leaflets, extra pages and all the fluff that comes in the post.

Steve is doing something amazing, good for him.

I feel going paperless is safer then having paper statements just laying around! Right on

Going paperless is something I should really get around to doing as well :)
Definitely agree on consolidating the trips too, and if your area supports recycling then sort out those metal cans, rinse them out, and recycle ‘em.

One thing I have to disagree on though is the CFL bulbs. I once bought a set of these bulbs for the home and after a couple of months I had to get rid of them because I felt the quality of the light was quite strange. This can be verified by using a CD and looking at the scatter pattern of CFL light. Notice how it is not a smooth spectrum. They throw off an ugly, unhealthy light, and if disposed improperly of can pose a hazard to the environment.

The rest is more or less spot on, and the programmable thermostats are a win. Much better than centralized heating not only in terms of comfort, but in costs as well!

Thanks guys for your thoughts and suggestions! I think going paperless makes it easier not only for the environment, but also for our house. I like having less clutter around the office.
