Couple Money Weekly Round-Up: Leftovers!

by Elle on May 2, 2010

We’re eating leftovers for lunch and I have to comment that they taste better to me than Friday. I picked up eggplant parmigiana and my husband veal contadina which is veal stuffed with Italian sausage, fresh mozzarella, spinach, topped with mushroom-marinara sauce over fettucini.

Pasta is great leftover food!

We enjoy eating out and having some leftovers the next day or so. With a vacation coming up, we’re cutting back a bit so we can try out some new things next month.

Saving a Bit While Eating Out

Here are some things that we do to save a little bit of cash. We’ve been doing some of these since we dated in college.

  • Go to local spots for weeknight deals. Check with your friends to get an idea of where deals are. We’re fortunate to have several friends familiar with the area who usually have suggestions on where to eat.
  • Make sure you take leftovers home. Many times, restaurant portions are huge. Do yourself a favor and save some for another meal.
  • Get a discount. Check online to see if your restaurant has some deals. The bistro we went Friday had an online deal that was better than the one the advertised on the meal. You may also want to check out Restaurant.com for cheap gift certificates.

What tips do you have for making leftovers interesting?

I always take home a doggie bag from restaurants that serve large portions — it’s good for both my wallet and my waistline. Thanks for the post highlight!

For me it’s taking advantage of sponsored events at work, sometimes it’s worth sitting through an hour long presentation on routers and switches to get some free Thai food. Thanks so much for including me in your roundup, have a great week!

Man, there are definitely some leftovers that are better the second time around. I wonder why that is? To save on food in restaurants, it’s usually less expensive to go during lunch. The portions might be a little smaller then, but they’re usually still large enough for leftovers.

Every time I think of an expensive meal, I think about leftovers and how it can feed me twice. Yum.
