Good news- we’re looking for a new (to us) car. Bad news – our old car was declared a total loss. We got into a car accident the beginning of this month. Now a couple of weeks later we’re a one car family. We finally got our check from the insurance company, so we are looking for a replacement.
What We’re Looking for in Our Next Car
My husband was really happy with his Acura. It was a reliable car and didn’t cost much to get it repaired. To decide what the car should have, we looked at some of our favorite things about the Acura.
- Good Gas Mileage- Our last car had gotten over 30 mpg. We’re hoping to get approximately the same from the new car.
- Solid Reliability– We’re buying a used vehicle so we’re hoping to minimize the chance of repairs by focusing on highly rated vehicles.
- Cheap (in Price) Parts – Compared to my VW, parts for Acuras are cheap. We want a car that doesn’t have expensive parts to replace.
- Not Red– My husband really doesn’t like red for his car, so I’m putting this on the list.
My husband has some preferences – he likes coupes and he would to have manual transmission on the car. He’s not absolute on these things and is willing to adapt to something else. I think he should be able to find something in his price range that he’ll enjoy.
We’ve put the word of that we’re hunting for a new to us car and we’re looking at Craigslist for some potential cars.
We’re using Kelley Blue Book to determine what a car is worth. Some private owners are off on their prices, mainly due to sentimental value or the include some of the extra they added on. While we’re willing to pay more for better features, if we’re looking at well used cars, it’s not that big of a deal.
Have you ever been in a car accident? Was your car declared a total loss? How quickly did you get the check? How long did it take you to find a replacement?
