Best Personal Finance Books to Become Debt Free
Getting out of debt is a fantastic goal to have as a couple because what it does is give you options.
So many couples feel trapped within their careers or maybe when they’re living their choices because they have so many debts to pay off.
I have five books that I think are absolutely crucial to you two started. Four are already out and one will be released in a few weeks.
You can see my brief review here or check out my take right below!
The Total Money Makeover
The first one on my list is The Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey. It’s a classic. I love it.
Dave lays it out in these baby steps as he calls it where you focus on one thing and part of the process is getting completely out of debt.
Some people might argue that a debt snowball is technically not the fastest way to get out of debt since you’re focused on the balance rather than the interest rate.
I would point out that millions have gotten out of debt using this method because psychologically it gives them the when they need to stay motivated.
To me that’s the most important -you finishing paying this debt off.
Her Money Matters
The second one I want to recommend is Her Money Matters. It’s kind of along the same lines with Dave Ramsey with the psychology of how you treat money.
Where we pick up our habits and how can we change them if we don’t understand that then it’s going to be hard to make fundamental changes.
I highly recommend picking up Jen’s book. She’s an accredited financial counselor and she specializes in money mindsets.
This is crucial especially if you guys had massive amounts of debt. To stay motivated
What’s the big picture?
So Jen’s book is fantastic on nailing that topic.
I Will Teach You to Be Rich
The third book is called I Will Teach You to Be Rich. It sounds like a scam but Ramit’s book has fantastic advice on getting out of debt.
He really breaks it down financially again with the psychology and automation.
He shows how you can set up your paychecks, bills, and investments on autopilot. So if you don’t know how to set up your money this is a great guide.
Jumpstart Your Marriage and Your Money
The fourth book is Jumpstart Your Marriage and Your Money. Yep, I’m including this on the list because when I wrote this book getting out of debt was something I really want to hone on as a key message.
I seen too many couples feel stressed out and having fights in their marriage because debt has basically tied them down.
I wanted to focus on a process to help you guys get on the same page with how you’re going to get out of debt and then show you how to work through the process with your finances.
You Can Retire Early
Finally, the last book is You Can Retire Early. The title doesn’t sound like it’s a get out of debt book but Deacon and his wife paid off over $50,000 dollars of debt in less than 2 years!
This shows you how you can take this idea of getting out of debt work together as a team. And then you can pivot towards other goals. In this case a retiring early.
Bonus: Broke Millennial
Broke Millennial is a fantastic read. It’s fun and it’s a solid personal finance book. It shows you the whys and the hows with managing your money intelligently.
