Is your entrepreneurial spirit pushing you to go out on your own and start a business based out of your home?

Maybe you are out of work and need a way to support your family.  Or perhaps you want the freedom of working from home so you can spend more time with your children.  Or maybe you’re sick of taking orders from your boss and you just can’t take it anymore.

Whatever your reasons, an internet business could be the answer to your dreams.  But where do you start?

Beware of Work From Home Scams

First of all, you should be aware that many of the work from home “opportunities” you will find advertised on the web are nothing more than scams.  If you see claims of making thousands of dollars overnight with no work involved, stay away.  Any site that expects you to pay an upfront fee without actually knowing what you’re getting in return should be looked upon suspiciously as well.  A little common sense can go a long way toward keeping you out of trouble.

Working Online From Home

Now let’s talk about a few internet-based businesses that you can start from home with very little startup costs.

Ebay businesses are still incredibly popular.  Competition can be fierce at times but if you can carve out a niche for yourself your business could really take off.  Most eBayers start off selling odds and ends from around their house, but the key is to find an inexpensive source of goods that are in demand.  You can also expect to spend a good deal of time packing up and mailing orders, especially around the holidays.

There is a huge market for graphic design work so if you have the skills you can offer your services online.  Your tasks could range from creating simple ebook covers to designing graphics for entire websites.   Once you build a portfolio and start getting referrals you may end up with more business than you can handle.

Virtual assistants are always in demand on the internet.  Lots of online business owners need tasks completed and are happy to outsource them for a reasonable fee.  VA duties can include research, writing, translation, customer support and much more.

If you're willing to take time on giving feedback paid market research jobs here and there that you can use to supplement your income.

Of course you can always start your own blog where you control everything from soup to nuts!  Blogging is a fun way to make money online and it can be very profitable.  But it does take some time and patience to get started.  You’ll make little to nothing in the beginning, but if you stick with it you could eventually earn a full time income blogging.

  1. Dude! I’ve been trying to get my sister to start her own graphic design business for like four years to no avail. She is super talented too. Congrats on the guest post. Nice work!

  2. These are some good starting points for people interested in working from home. I think your most important tip is to beware of scams. Any job offering unbelievable amounts of money are highly suspicious.

  3. I stopped working last February and started blogging in March. (Although I bought my domain name last October.) While I am not making a ton of money by any means, blogging has been fantastic, fun, and a great learning experience.

I have also done my share of selling on ebay and Amazon. The internet has provided a great option for generating income with a low barrier to entry. You do have to work hard, but hey, who doesn’t have some stuff laying around they could try and sell?

  4. Thanks for sharing the information on working online from home. I blog for self accountability, but if I could mold the blog into a income stream, all the better.

  5. @James, thanks for the kind words. Hope your sister can turn her skills into cash.

@Little House, you’re right there are many scammers out there hoping to rob you of your money.

@Everyday Tips, the internet has made it easier than ever to start your own business.

@Lisa, I see you have joined the Yakezie Challenge. That’s great! Stay with it and you’ll see your blog turn into an income stream for sure.
