Enemy of Debt InterviewEnemy of Debt

Why did you start Enemy of Debt?

I started Enemy of Debt because I was so fired up about my new journey that I had to share my passion with others! I wanted to inspire and help motivate people to get their finances in order once and for all, and in turn discover a whole new world of benefits through financial freedom!

The truth shall set us free, but in order to hear it sometimes we have to be honest with ourselves. Enemy of Debt is about personal responsibility and no longer make excuses.

You talk about motivational money management on the blog, what seems to keep people from applying what they learn?

I believe there are many obstacles that keep us from applying what we do know about managing money. The biggest obstacles are the fear of failure, the fear of finding out how bad our situations really are, being complacent when times are good, and not truly understanding how compound interest works. Essentially we are our biggest obstacles!

You’ve lead a class on Financial Peace University; what has been the hardest part of the program? What has been the easiest?

The folks that I have had the pleasure of working with have the hardest time transforming their habits. Some of their financial behaviors are deep-rooted and have been neglected for most of their lives. Dealing with those behaviors can be very emotional and overwhelming. Going against the grain of society can also be a hard pill to swallow. I find that people generally find that it is easier to save $1,000 than they thought. Once they start budgeting it's like giving themselves a raise.

You must have some favorite posts that you’ve written start Enemy of Debt, which are they and why?

I personally like Personal Finance For Beginners: A Lesson From Oseola McCarty because this lady proves that it's not about how much you make, it's about what you do with it that counts.

Other favorites are articles that challenge my readers like The Dream Budget: YourDebt Free Potential! What’s Yours?Have You Ever Had A DEBT FREE Christmas?, and Becoming Debt Free Is 99% Intensity and 1% Basic Math.

If I may, another favorite would be the interview I did with my local Psychology of Money and Wealth professor. I think managing money has more to do with psychology than it does with math or knowledge, so addressing that aspect makes more sense to me.

What are your goals this year with Enemy of Debt?

I have slowed down on EOD a bit for the moment but mostly because I have been working really hard on my health using the same hardcore methods I did to get out of debt. I am working on creating some financial eBooks that are lesson-oriented as well as motivational.

I would like to also publish the new EOD Deluxe Budget 3.0, which will have a strong focus on budgeting for beginners. Other than that, I just want to inspire more and more people to take the debt free plunge because it is worth every ounce of effort.

  1. Good to hear Brad is around!

What are the things exactly you are doing for your health Brad?

As a blogger, I’ve tried to connect the mental to physical connection every time I write i.e. one post written and published = 2 hours of tennis an 100 pushups and 150 situps. The more I write, the more I exercise, so one doesn’t dominate the other.

    Look forward to you e-book!

    Best,

    Sam

  2. Thank Elle, this was great! I will be sure to let you know when I finally complete the EOD Budget 3.0. Still in the works but I am making progress. Thanks for doing this and for having such a wonderful and unique financial website! I love reading your blog!

  3. Financial Samurai – Yep, I am still around! 🙂 I was struggling with my time and how to manage everything I have going on for a brief moment in time, but things seem to be turning the corner. Sometimes blogging is so overwhelming! 🙂

I am currently working on losing weight, and have lost about 19 pounds. I am currently using hiking as my weight loss outlet, but intend on starting P90X very soon! I am hoping to lose another 50 pounds before we start trying to bring another Enemy of Debt into this world. 🙂

Bucksome – Awww, thank you so much! Comments like yours make me very glad I decided to stick around! I am finally starting to get my sanity back. LOL

To Couple Money Readers – I hope you enjoy Enemy of Debt. Elle and I share the same goals in helping others become more financially secure, especially by addressing the place where the most damage is done…in the marriage!

Good luck to you all!! 😀

  4. Yea, Brad, you are an amazing guy! You’re so inspiring and just so dang passionate about getting out of debt, and helping others do the same! Cool to hear some of your thoughts and plans for the future.

  5. Brad this is good stuff & I plan to get my hubby reading your blog too. He & I are ready to make changes in our finances! We have a lot on our plate with two kids, one in private school & on a travel softball team that competes nationally and the other in pull ups & daycare fees! Thankfully we both have a job at the moment but make very modest salaries! We need deliverance from the debt we are mounting up lately! Thank you for sharing this awesome gift you have and I look forward to reading more of your blogs! Good luck! 🙂
